The city of Miami, Florida is more than just a busy gateway be air and sea to destinations around the globe. Many unique experiences await visitors such as can be enjoyed at Parrot Jungle Island. In addition to parrots, lions and tigers, ligers which are a cross between a tiger and a lion await visitors. Along with flamingos so closely associated with southern Florida, creatures at Parrot Jungle range from baboons and orangutans to chimpanzees.

In 1935, the Joseph DuMond family brought 6 monkeys to Miami only to find the climate and landscape a perfect habitat for them. As interest grew, DuMond began developing some 30 acres making it possible for humans to wander through a caged area while the monkeys were free to interact with and show off for them.

A unique feature of the Miami Zoo is there are no cages. The animals are grouped according to habitat needs and behavioral ability to get along with each other in an African safari-type atmosphere. One new resident is Abacus, a black rhino member of the endangered animals list. The zoo is home to the only Sultan Tit known to exist in captivity. This creature descends from the dinosaur age.

The first key to enjoying a trip to Miami Beach is to know when to go to avoid the crowds. Going on when its crowded makes it hard to drive, hard to get restaurant reservations, and next to impossible to get a place to stay. Unless the traveler is especially interested in the event, avoid early February during the Miami Boat show, March brings Spring break the Winter Music Conference. May brings the Miami International Film Festival and Memorial Day weekend. December brings the Art Basel.
The second key to enjoying a trip to Miami Beach is to know where to stay. The best hotel at Miami Beach for singles and young married couples is the Delano Hotel in the art-deco district. Guest will enjoy the landscaped orchard and the private beach. The best hotel at Miami Beach for families is Fountainbleu. Guests will be delighted with the wonderful dining options here and the interactive children’s water activities. Those traveling on a budget should check out Hotel Chelsea. Here guests can enjoy Japanese style rooms complete with Japanese style futon beds and bamboo floors.
The third key to enjoying a trip to Miami Beach is to know where to eat.

For travelers who will be staying in the downtown Miami area, there is plenty to see and do. The traffic in the downtown area is often quite heavy, but there is no need to drive. The free Metromover trams cover a long area from the Brickell financial district on the south side of the Miami River to the Omni Center on north side. There are three Metromover routes, all of which start and end at Government Center. All the Miami buses plus the Metromover and Metrorail routes connect at Government Center. Buses going to Miami Beach depart from both Government Center and the Omni Center.

Along the shore from the mouth of the Miami River, Bayfront Park runs north along Biscayne Bay parallel to Biscayne Boulevard. There are several walking paths and fountains within Bayfront Park as it continues north to the Miamarina tour boat docks. Among several tour vessels is a replica pirate ship, an antique sailing schooner, and a tiki party barge that looks like a floating jungle hut. Just north of the tour boats are several gigantic yachts that dock for the season. Connected to Miamarina is the Bayside outdoor shopping complex with restaurants and souvenir shops.

With cold weather rapidly approaching a warm winter vacation is on everyone’s mind. Air travel being what it is today even the most common and meager minded individual can find an affordable way to get to just about any global destination. Among all the vacation destination options available there is one classic choice that comes to mind. Miami, Florida with it’s warm weather, sunny beaches, and innumerable attractions sticks out as the stateside retreat into warmth and luxury from an otherwise cold harsh winter.
Whether you’re into arts, animals, swimming, or music Miami has something to offer. The Frost art museum featuring American photography from the 1960’s and 1970’s. The Lowe art museum features great pottery, sculptures, and various ceramics from ages spanning throughout history. Miami also has to offer the Venetian Pool. An old limestone quarry converted into the beautiful pool with a waterfall in the 1920’s. Fed by a natural spring the pool is refilled everyday. Of course, even with all the man made attractions in the area who can forget about the natural splendor of the beaches. Due to Miami’s year round warm weather the beaches are always bustling with some kind of activity. Although the water may be too cold to swim in for the winter months action on the sandy beaches is never far off. Some attractions are the Fedex Orange Bowl football game, the South Beach wine and food festival, the Winter Party, the Winter Music Conference, the White Party, and of course the King Mango Strut.
